Resilience, Retribution Armor, and Excuses

While I did not get the chance to ask the question myself (the line for Q&A wasn't long, but they only took ~6 people), someone DID:

Q: Why is resilience missing on the Paladin PvP sets

A: "Season 3 set does have resilience. We won't change the older sets, because players bought them knowing what they were."

Excuse me, but just what the hell does that mean exactly?

Did those in charge of designing the gear NOT know what it was? Please explain how this excuses, on ANY level, the error made when designing the items. As well, we knew "what they were" implies that we had some ALTERNATIVE??! What else were we supposed to do? How else were we supposed to gear ourselves?

Going by that "knowing what you're getting" logic (which is VERY amusing, considering you're speaking to Paladins), if anyone obtains ANY piece of gear, or ANYTHING in the game whatsoever, why would you EVER change it? They "know what they're getting", so why bother? Because correcting oversights and mistakes is the right thing to do, in order to make the game better, that's why.

Please explain the meaning of the "players knew what they were buying" excuse given.
