We’re in the process of finalizing our tests on all realms and are extending the anticipated time for bringing them back online to 6:00 p.m. PDT.

We are in the final stages of completing the maintenance process and will begin bringing realms online shortly. We currently anticipate all realms will be online by 5:00 p.m. PDT and appreciate your continued patience.

Update (1:25 p.m. PDT):

We’re in the process of transitioning many of our internal tools to the new patch and are currently experiencing a longer than anticipated time to completion. We’re now estimating maintenance to be completed and realms available by 4:00 p.m. PDT. We’re working to get you in-game as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.

We have extended our regularly scheduled maintenance by two hours and currently expect all realms to be available by approximately 2:00 p.m. PDT. We apologize for the delay and are working to have all realms online as soon as possible.

Extended maintenance will begin tonight at midnight, Tuesday, October 12 for the release of patch 4.0.1. Maintenance will begin at 12:01 a.m. PDT and conclude at approximately 12:01 p.m. PDT. During this time all realms and many web services will be unavailable.

looks like I'll have to wait to get 4.0.1 when they actually make the background downloader start downloading it.

Right, there will be a final patch you'll download tonight/tomorrow. Around 100MB. Once that's downloaded, the update will begin which could take a while depending on various system factors (potentially over an hour). There are a lot of changes obviously, not the least of which is the switch to the new streaming client infrastructure. It's a very good idea to ensure you're all ready to patch up, and then plan for a lengthy install process. And of course it's then just waiting for the realms to be available. :)
