Warcraft's history abounds with heroic tales, fierce battles, and painful losses that have had a lasting impact on the world of Azeroth. This new series, "The Library," will present fiction depicting some of the Warcraft universe's most epic moments and greatest mysteries...

Hold on for dear life, because this week's book, The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm by Christie Golden, takes readers on a heart-pounding journey through the momentous events that occurred just prior to the Cataclysm—a catastrophe that has changed the face of Azeroth forever!

In this story, the elements are in turmoil—confused, distressed, and fearful—and no one seems to know why. Thrall, troubled by these disturbances, sets off for Nagrand to seek the sage advice of Greatmother Geyah and commune with Outland's elementals. Thrall is convinced that journeying to his ancestors' homeworld is the only way to prevent disaster, but he's also wracked with worry about the future of his beloved Horde. Tension and uncertainty are on the rise due to supply shortages. Relations with the Alliance are deteriorating, and the appointment of Garrosh Hellscream as acting warchief threatens to inflame matters even more.

In Stormwind, King Varian Wrynn seeks revenge for the apparent Horde slaughter of a small band of night elves in Ashenvale—a clear violation of the peace treaty between the two factions. Only the intervention of Lady Jaina Proudmoore and Varian's son, Prince Anduin, prevents the outbreak of a full-fledged war. The young prince also struggles with problems of his own, ambivalent about his father's insistence that he follow in the king's footsteps and become a warrior. During a much-needed sojourn in Ironforge, Anduin finds himself entangled in political intrigue that could irrevocably change the dwarven race's destiny.

Will Thrall discover what ails Azeroth's elements? Can the Horde prevail under the headstrong Warchief Garrosh? Does Anduin have what it takes to escape his father's shadow and help the dwarves in their hour of need?
