The paladin Q&A thread

Blizzard Post
This thread is supposed to serve two functions:

-Being a resource where players can find answers to the most frequently asked question (will be added to the OP)
-Allowing players to ask and answer questions about the paladin class.

When asking questions, try to be specific when you ask. If you f.ex. want to know which stats to focus on or which enchants is the best etc, state your spec and try to specify how you play.

Frequently asked paladin-questions

General questions

What is the general Blessing priority?

  • The general priority is:

Melee DPS (and hunters): Blessing of Might, Blessing of Kings, (Blessing of Wisdom)
Ranged DPS (caster): Blessing of Kings, Blessing of Wisdom.
Healers: Blessing of Wisdom, Blessing of Kings.
Tanks: (Blessing of Sanctuary), Blessing of Kings, Blessing of Might, (Blessing of Wisdom).

Note: This varies, and this is just a general list. In some fights melee would like BoK over BoM, and some hunters prefer BoW over BoK. A tip is to ask the different classes(roles) which buffs they prefer and keep them happy that way.

  • Which glyphs should I use?

    Holy:
    - Major Glyphs: The "must-have" glyph here is Glyph of Holy Light, get it! With 2 slots left most paladins choose Glyph of Divinity for the extra mana gained while using LoH and either Glyph of Seal of Light (5% more healing with SoL up) or Glyph of Seal of Wisdom (5% less mana burned with SoW up) for the last slot. The last slot is normally determined by your choice. Many paladins choose Glyph of Seal of Wisdom because of the synergy with the minor glyph Glyph of the Wise.
    - Minor Glyphs: Glyph of Lay on Hands is an obious choice here (increases mana gained from Lay on Hands). If you use Glyph of Seal of Wisdom, get Glyph of the Wise. Most of the minor glyphs in game are currently very bad, so it doesn't really matter what you choose to fill up here.

    Protection:
    - Major glyphs: Glyph of Seal of Vengeance is "the" glyph to have. To fill the last 2 major glyph spots you can choose between: Glyph of Righteous Defense, Glyph of Avengers Shield, Glyph of Judgement, Glyph of Spiritual Attunement, Glyph of Consecration and Glyph of Exorcism (if fighting undeads where spell interruption might become necessary). It's about personal choices here.

    Retribution:
    - Major Glyphs: We got two "must-have" glyphs for PvE are: Glyph of Consecration and Glyph of Judgement. If you're only into PvE Glyph of Avenging Wrath is the obious choice, alternatively Glpyh of Spiritual Attunment or Glyph of Crusader Strike is good choice for the last spot if you got mana problems. If you're into PvP, use Glyph of Seal of Command and Glyph of Judgement. For the last slot, Glyph of Turn Evil or Glyph of Avenging Wrath might be good options.

What about gems? (The gems are listed with the best ones first, epic gems will be added in a upcoming patch)

    Retribution:

    Red:

Strength gems are the best gems available, place these gems wherever it's possible.

    [Bold Cardinal Ruby] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40111)

    [Perfect Bold Bloodstone] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41432)

    Yellow:

Yellow gems are mostly used to reach meta gem requirements or good socket bonuses.

    [Etched Flawless Ametrine] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40143)
    [Inscribed Flawless Ametrine] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40142)

    [Inscribed Monarch Topaz] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40037)

    Blue:

Blue gems is not well itemized and you will noramlly only have 1 of these (to reach the metagem requirement).

[Enchanted Tear] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42702) (Uniqure-equipped, you may only use 1 of these)
    [Sovereign Dreadstone] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40129)
    [Sovereign Twilight Opal] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40022)

    Meta:

[Relentless Earthsiege Diamond] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41398) - is the meta gem of choice here. It's a 0.5 - 1 DPS loss compared to Chaotic Skyflare Diamond, but the more benefiting gem requirements makes sure this gem come out on top.
[Chaotic Skyflare Diamond] (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41285) - Use this gem if you're a jewelcrafter, the jewelcrafting only prismatic gems will cover the gem requirement.

    Holy questions

Which stats affect Holy paladins healing and mana regen?

    • -Spell Power
      -Crit
      -Intellect
      -MP5

Note: Spirit does NOT noticeably affect holy paladins, and should be avoided on gear if possible.

  • What is the Holy Light coefficients?

  • The holy light coefficients is 166%. Which means that your Holy Light will heal for the base healing + 166% of your SP.

  • What is the Flash of Light coefficients?

  • The holy light coefficients is 100%. Which means that your Flash of Light will heal for the base healing + 100% of your SP.

  • What is the Holy Shock coefficients?

  • Holy Shock's healing coefficients is 81%. Which means that your Holy Shock will heal for the base healing + 81% of your SP. The damage coefficient is 43%.

  • Protection questions

Which stats increases protection paladins avoidance and mitigation?

    • -Armor
      -Defense
      -Dodge
      -Parry
      -Block rating
      -Block Value
      -Agility
      -Strength
      -(Expertise)

Note: Stamina does not increase avoidance or mitigation, but is still an important part of protection paladins gear. 2 Strength = 1 Block Value. Agility = 2 armor and additional dodge.

  • What is the difference between Block Rating and Block Value?

  • The main difference is this:

    - Block Rating increases your chance to block an attack. To increase Block Chance by 1% you need 16.39 Block Rating.
    - Block Value increases the amount of damage blocked. 1 Block Value will increase damage blocked by 1 each time you Block an attack. 2 Strength equals 1 Block Value.

Note: You can NOT block an attack when hit from behind.

  • What about stamina?

  • 1 Stamina = 10 Hit Points (HP). 1 Stamina for a protection paladin (with Combat Expertise and Sacred Duty) equals 11.2 HP.

  • How much defense do I need to become "uncrittable"?

  • You need 540 Defense Skill to become "uncrittable" at level 80. That means that you want to get 140 additional defense skill from gear.

  • Which stats affects protection paladins DPS/Threat the most?

  • Before WotlK protection paladins scaled the best with spelldamage. Now this is changed, the stats that increase protection paladins damage/threat the most are:

      - Your weapons damage
      - Strength/Attack Power
      - Crit
      - Hit
      - Expertise

Note: Both Strength and Expertise also increase avoidance/mitigation slightly.
