Patch 1.12.1 Riding Skill Changes

Update - 09/29/06 11:16 am

For those of you that do have the correct Riding skill according to the latest patch, or have not incorrectly been denied the Riding skill; your concerns regarding the functionality of the latest patch are better left on our General forum for discussion. This applies, for example, if you are inquiring about the following:

  • Alterac Valley mounts overall price increase

  • Players only receiving (75) Riding skill for the rank 11 PvP mounts when purchased after the patch.

  • Players being required to purchase (150) Riding skill if a Zul'Gurub (or other rare drop) mount is one's first Epic mount.

These are each concerns pertaining to developmental decisions and game design with which the Game Master department will, unfortunately, be unable to offer any assistance.

If you have any ideas for altering this functionality, it is best to post on our Suggestions forum. Again, I must stress that inquiries about such matters should not be made on the Customer Service forum. Additional posts about these, and similar subjects may be deleted to prevent clutter. Thanks for your understanding. = )

Update - 09/28/06 10:55 am

In our ongoing efforts to assist players with issues stemming from the changes made to the Riding skill in patch 1.12.1, we request that all players who meet the following criteria please submit an in-game petition as soon as possible:

    Player:

  • Has a level 60 Racial or Alterac Valley Epic mount,

  • Does not have the Journeyman (150) Riding skill,

  • Had purchased the mount prior to the 09/26 patch.

-OR-

    Player:

  • Has a level 40+ Racial Standard (nonepic) mount,

  • Does not have the Apprentice (75) Riding skill,

  • Had purchased the mount prior to the 09/26 patch.

-OR-

    Player:

  • Is a level 40+ Warlock,

  • Has received the Felsteed,

  • Does not have the Apprentice (75) Riding skill

As an additional note, we offer our apologies for the confusion caused by this patch and the sudden changes made to the functionality of mounts and the associated Riding skill. It is our goal to provide the best service possible and we feel the lack of warning caused an inconvenience for our playerbase. Thank you everyone for your continued patience as we work to determine the best possible course of action moving forward to assist those who were adversely affected by the changes to this system.

Hello folks,

Recent changes to the requirements for the way in which mounts can be purchased and rode have led to cause for concern and confusion on our forum. For this reason, we'd like to share with you the new developmental changes implemented in Patch 1.12.1.

Firstly, there are no more race-specific riding skills. All rideable mounts currently within the World of Warcraft will require one of the following skills:

Apprentice Riding (75) - Learned for 90 gold (Requires level 40)
Journeyman Riding (150) - Learned for 900 gold (Requires level 60)

"Ch-Ch-Changes" - Due to the change in riding skill requirements and costs, here are the new standard costs of all mounts:

Level 40 mount - 10 Gold
Level 60 mount - 100 Gold
AV epic reward mount - 10 Gold
PvP epic reward mount - 10 Gold

"New Rule" - The following are some general rules that apply to this new change:

The following applies for players who met these conditions prior to realm maintenance on 09/26
  • As of 1.12.1, players with any riding skill will get Apprentice riding skill.

  • As of 1.12.1, players with any standard non-epic mount will get Apprentice riding skill.

  • As of 1.12.1, players with any standard Epic, Rare Drop, or Alterac Valley mount will get Journeyman riding skill.

  • As of 1.12.1, players with PvP or Wintersaber mounts will get Journeyman riding skill, although the mounts only require Apprentice riding skill.

  • You have to be level 40 to obtain Apprentice Riding (75), and level 60 to obtain Journeyman Riding (150).

  • Vendors now do not sell mounts to players of other races unless the player has exalted status with their race.

  • All Mounts are changed to Bind on Pickup rather than Bind on Use.

"Cause for Concern" - Since we are receiving several petitions raising questions as to the changes and limitations set forth in the new system, here is a breakdown of how things should work:
  • If you are level 60 and do NOT have an epic mount, you will NOT get 150 riding skill.

  • If you are level 60 and you DO have an epic mount, you DO get 150 riding skill

  • If you are level 59 (or below) and you DO have an epic mount, you will NOT get 150 riding skill.

  • If you are level 60 and the ONLY mount you have is a standard AQ mount, you will NOT gain any riding skill.

  • Warlocks and Paladins will automatically learn the appropriate riding skill level when they complete their mount questlines.

Here is a breakdown of the mounts available in game listed by the skill necessary to ride them:

Q u o t e:
I am a level 38, and have been holding onto a mount which I purchased for my very first mount training ever at 40. I quickly posted a ticket to speak with a GM when this new patch came out. On 09/27/06 at 8:15 EST I spoke with GM Euthan who informed me that I was mistaken if I thought I might be able to trade my mount for gold back, and "unfortunately" nothing would be done. So, there it is. I either had to suck it up, and pay 90 more gold in order to ride a mount at 40, or not ride a mount for quite awhile. I decided to call and end my account, but Blizzard's account & billing services decided at that very same time to have "meeting", and didn't want to be at their phones to handle my call. I will be calling tomorrow. I will be even more angry than I am right now.

If you would be so kind, please submit a new petition at your earliest convenience, Mystwhisper. Although I have not looked into the details behind your case, our ways for handling situations such as the one you've described have changed since your last petition. I wish you luck in seeing to it that the issue you've reported is resolved to your satisfaction. ; )

Q u o t e:
This blue post is almost good enough for me; the only thing that concerns me is that this update could possibly not apply to AV mounts (note the careful usage of the word "racial" when describing the epic mounts).

I have just updated my post to include AV mounts. In other words for example, if one purchased an AV mount last week and was only level 58 at the time of the patch they would not have received the appropriate riding skill. If you find yourself in this situation, please submit an in-game petition to us as well.

Q u o t e:
Obviously, there are a few other concerns that people have voiced, having to do with Rank 11 mounts, having to buy level 75 riding skill even if you never intended to buy a level 40 mount, etc.

If a player does not already have 75 Riding skill and purchases a PvP rank 11 mount after the patch, they will need to purchase the riding skill as well. This would make the cost of the mount roughly the same as it was before the patch.

I bought my mount pre 9/27, I see some GM's say their'll be reinbursing, some say no, is there a definitive answer? I don't want to pay 170g total for my mount that I have and can't yet use.

If you are sure that you meet all of the criteria I've laid out in this thread, please submit another in-game petition and make reference to this thread. We are working to ensure everyone is on the same page now; however, given all of the variables of these changes, mistakes can happen. Please give Rank 11 a significantly reduced cost to learning riding skill (150), this totally kills one of my main goals for pvp and if this doesnt get changed I likely won't pvp regularly anymore. These kind of changes make the game less enjoyable.

At this point, such a suggestion would be better left on our Suggestions forum, as your assertion covers more of a functionality/devolopmental aspect.

You should be able to press "K" to look at your Skills and verify that your Riding skill is 75/75. Can you see it there? :)

Sadly it appears that the GM who carried out the investigation has made an error. They claim that the mount was bought "a full day" after the patch. This is incorrect.

I bought my mount at 2:45am on the morning of Tuesday 26th September, 15 minutes *before* the servers went down for the 1.12.1 patch, paying 72g for it.

I would like to know what options I have now. I am not at all happy at the prospect of having to pay out a further similar amount in order to learn to ride the mount that I have already paid 72g for.

It would appear that some misinterpretation arose in your last correspondence with us, Xaqa, for which I am truly sorry.

I bought the mount the night before the stupid patch, and then when we came on the next morning I could not even ride the stupid mount and was told that I needed to train to ride. I thought what the hell its only a few gold to train then I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it was 720 gold.

I've taken the liberty of personally investigating the matter, Shadowwarior, and I have found evidence to the contrary. Our logs state the following:

2006/09/27 09:07:01 GMT - A Great White Kodo enters your inventory, indicating that it was either looted or, as in this case, purchased.

As a frame of reference, the realms came online from maintenance at approximately 09/26/2006 18:00:00 GMT, which means that you acquired the mount after the patch; thus, you appropriately only have Apprentice (75) Riding, and shall now have to purchase Journeyman (150) Riding.

Q u o t e:
I do not care that your logs say one thing or another, we all already saw that your blue (Hortus) has lied and mislead us already so what makes it impossible for your stupid logs to be wrong or faked etc.

Our records are not incorrect in this regard, I'm afraid, nor do we have any incentive (or ability) to "fake" them in the manner you have described.

Q u o t e:
I am looking for an answer and I do not want the run around and double talk etc….

I believe I have been quite straightforward in my response, Shadowwarior, although I suppose that is ultimately for you to decide. :)

Is posting here what gets somebody to actually look at your case? I sent an ingame ticket to a GM yesterday regarding not having the appropriate riding skill for having my AV mount pre-patch. They sent back a response saying that it was working as intended. This is obviously incorrect, could you please see about getting this worked out?

I've looked into your situation as well, Soulgeist, and this is what I found in our logs with regard to your apparent issue with Riding Skill:

2006/09/28 04:35:21 GMT - A Stormpike Battle Charger enters your inventory, signifying that it was purchased and "looted," so to speak.

Again, as a frame of reference, the realms came back online after maintenance at around 2006/09/26 18:00:00 GMT, which means that your mount was in fact purchased after the 1.12.1 patch. I do apologise, however, for any confusion you may have been caused by this matter. :)

I'm having a similar problem. I bought my mount about 2 weeks ago. After a hard grind just to get enough money for the mount, I went to Brill and bought my pretty undead horse. Then I started to grind to 40 so that I could ride her. I didn't quite make 40 by the patch. My mount has been in my bags waiting since I bought it, and hoped that this issue was resolved after today. I petitioned, like I was told to do via this thread, and I still have no riding skill. I'm too discouraged that I've followed the directions as told here, and still left in the dust. I would like my riding skill, please. I would have waited if I had known about this patch. I'm so discouraged I don't want to play my little mage anymore. I know of people that at lvl 35, have their riding skills because they already had their mounts.

Please fix this.

Everything should have been sorted out for you, Voice; your character should now have Apprentice (75) Riding Skill. :)

Id just like for someone to fix the problem, im not in a hurry im still lvl 37 ( have the mount in me bank ).
** Edit **
Alt's Name is Eurekka, 37 Druid Magtheridon

Noroi, I've just confirmed that you've submitted another petition concerning the matter and your situation is being reviewed for further considering. You should be hearing from a Game Master at some point in the near future, through in-game means or via e-mail. The best of luck to you, and I'm very sorry for any previous frustration caused due to this issue.

Submit an in-game petition, Thakilla - we may be able to help you out! Please note this by Batta:
Q u o t e:
In our ongoing efforts to assist players with issues stemming from the changes made to the Riding skill in patch 1.12.1, we request that all players who meet the following criteria please submit an in-game petition as soon as possible:

Player:
* Has a level 60 Racial or Alterac Valley Epic mount,
* Does not have the Journeyman (150) Riding skill,
* Had purchased the mount prior to the 09/26 patch.

-OR-

Player:
* Has a level 40+ Racial Standard (nonepic) mount,
* Does not have the Apprentice (75) Riding skill,
* Had purchased the mount prior to the 09/26 patch.

-OR-

Player:
* Is a level 40+ Warlock,
* Has received the Felsteed,
* Does not have the Apprentice (75) Riding skill

As an additional note, we offer our apologies for the confusion caused by this patch and the sudden changes made to the functionality of mounts and the associated Riding skill. It is our goal to provide the best service possible and we feel the lack of warning caused an inconvenience for our playerbase. Thank you everyone for your continued patience as we work to determine the best possible course of action moving forward to assist those who were adversely affected by the changes to this system.

I believe your character would fall under the section I have bolded. ;)

So does that mean this question is in a wrong place?

I was told by both a GM and another blue in the other forums to post here.

This still does not answer my question or get me any closer to fixing this problem.

This is my first character so do forgive me if I need it spelled out further.

Either way we are incredibly frustrated and extremely tired of getting the run around from everyone.

Thanks for your attention to this issue.

Mith, are you sure you're looking at the purchase price of the level 40 mount? As of this patch, these mounts should be 10 gold. So far, I have seen no additional reports of the price of the level 40 mounts being reflected as 90 gold incorrectly.

Batta or Berg this is what I have been told during my last attempt to obtain 150 riding skill.

GM said that since I have a racial mount, and do not have level 150 riding skill, and the mount was purchased pre patch I am eligible for the free 150 skill but must first obtain level 60 on my character, whom is level 55 currently, log out, and then will be granted 150 riding skill upon logging back in. If not to submit a ticket to have the skill granted. Is this correct or do I need to try a 5th time?

TY

This is being looked into, Methusala. I completely understand how frustrating this issue has been, and hopefully we can get this all addressed sooner rather than later here.

I believe you are in error suggestion those should be in different forum. To me this is a fundamental customer service issue. Blizz screwed up in implementation of this change. No major anouncement of such drastic change, ill thought ramifications, poorly executed grandfathering. The patch notes I got did not even make mention of this change. This comes down to a screw up, and how you deal with it is all about customer service.

I

I understand you have legitimate concerns about the nature of this recent patch, Shambulls. You must understand, however, that you're linking this to a customer service issue based on the notion that these changes were inconvenient and ill-thought-out. The Game Master department, which includes those who moderate this forum, have no control over design changes; nor, are we able to discuss game mechanics in such a way. What we are doing here is making sure players are not forced to pay nearly double the price for a mount illegitimately based on an issue with the way in which this patch was applied.

I submitted my ticket and got a reaffirming response but then a denial that was vague. Me and my friend who use my account purposefully grinded the gold and AV reputation before the patch because we were told if we had it in our inventory before, we'd get the skill. We had it and didn't receive the skill. I waited to do anything since there was a noted "Hotfix" that I thought would catch it but when I found this thread I decided to submit a ticket. They seemed frinedly but right after I received a denial e-mail that read:

Unfortunately, we will be unable to assist in this matter. Our records indicate that the mount in question was purchased after the 1.12.1 patch was applied. Please accept my apologies for this inconvenience, Wickid.

I no longer believe that I'll have my situation resolved in any satisfactory way, but I guess a small part of me would at least like to be heard. At the least, I'll try to keep the story short :/

I have no where else to turn to, and I see such great work being done for others, so maybe some of that will come my way.

Before news of the new mount changes, I decided that I missed playing support far too much to ignore it, and finally made the character I played back in closed Beta, a druid. I'd had a druid before, but not on Alliance, where I feel most at home.

When news of the patch came, I noticed that Hortus had reported that if you had an epic mount in your possession, you'd get the skill. Months ago, before I had left the game for awhile, I got the money to purchase a mount for my gnome rogue, Izmo. With the money saved up, I got my mount at level 54 or 55 and held onto it. Seeing this as the same thing as moving any other unbound item between characters, I sent it to my druid, happy in the fact that I would get some kind of use out of it.

After the patch hit, I noticed, like many others, that I didn't get the riding skill. After several failed attempts at GM contact, including a frustrating copy and paste conversation that noted I should submit a ticket if I'd like to speak with a GM (ah, the irony ...) I spoke with an admittedly kind GM.

Unfortunatly, he told me that because it was not a mount I myself could ever ride, I was inelidgibe, despite the post I saw earlier by Blizzard reps that said any mount was acceptable. I asked if anything could be done, and he told me no. I asked if the mount could at the LEAST be moved back to Izmo, but that also for some reason was unacceptable. In the end, all I wanted was to be able to come back to the game and make use of the resources I've acquired in what I believed to be a fair way.

I was turned down on getting my riding skill, moving the mount, or getting some kind of reimbursment of any kind regarding my mount. While I would be thrilled to know my druid's situation was handled the way I'd had hoped and I'd get the skill, or at least a refund in gold. I just don't want to see all that farming and work go to waste.

If anyone's read this story, thanks for your time, and while I don't know that my issue will ever be resolved, I wish luck to the rest of you that are trying to get what you rightfully earned.

I looked into this matter Raemus. In your case the issue is that the mount you sent your character is not a type of mount that can ever be used by that race. Each mount has on it a limited list of races that can use the item and for a Mechanostrider Night Elves are not on that list. I am sorry if an earlier discussion on reputation requirements confused you regarding this, however unfortunately even if a Night Elf had the reputation required they would still be unable to ride that particular mount.

I also purchased my level 40 mount early, however I did not recieve apprentice riding at the patch. I sent in a petition last night, but got an email saying basically "no can do." If this really can't be fixed, guess it's time to start farming again.

I am sorry for any confusion over this matter. This should now have been addressed Serah and there should be no need for further farming. *smiles*

Posting on behalf of my guildmate Skylark, like me she got the mount prior to the patch and now have to buy the training as well. When I got this fixed for me the GM I spoke to said she didn't have to be online to have it fixed and she petitioned it and logged off.

This resulted in a mail that said she wouldn't get any help, could someone who knows this stuff please look into this for her!

I have been informed that it appears Skylark has also had their riding skill adjusted.

My warlock has recently hit 40. I have completed my Felsteed quest but I have not received my Apprentice skill.

I've pettitioned a GM twice now and since I've been offline received email's. Once stating to "Check my Skills tab that is should be there" and another saying "You have to buy this skill if you hit 40 after the patch".

Lets hope 3rd time is a charm.

This should have been taken care of, Andane. Thanks for your patience in meantime. :)
