ok one of my friends has bought BC and will send me one of the free 10 day guest passes, but in order to use this do i have to pay the 40$ to download or can i find a place to download the client free and type in the code for the 10 day pass?

As the 10 day trial card states it's intended that he use his copy of World of Warcraft to install the client on your machine. However we also have our online 10 day free trial including a full client download.

There's no free trial for the expansion.

The guest passes are for the original game, to get someone that doesn't own the game and has never played before interested in playing. To give new players a chance to try it out. Although they're included with the expansion, they don't provide access to it. We don't have any plans to give previous or high level players a chance to try out the expansion for free at this time.
