Speaking from a personal point-of-view, I was guildless from the end of Wrath of the Lich King through the middle of Mists of Pandaria.

I think, for me, and similarly to others here, it was pretty relative to my state of mind at the time (finishing college), and just wanting a quiet place to retreat to. Guilds are generally pretty talkative/active, and I didn't have the energy at that stage in my life to keep up conversations, so it was easier to just ignore invites and stay in my shell than worry about appeasing any members or officers with their calls for help, or alternatives for raids.

Though, now, I'm much more engaged, and I think finding the right guild with engaged and active members drastically changes the play style of the game, and can definitely be grounds for finding some lifelong friends.

Or... you could just make your own guild - because why not have more bank space. ;)
