Player harassment vs a logical Blizz response

A guildie of mine is being harassed, as is our guild, Being called the [Removed]and racists by one specific player in Trade Chat.

We have as a guild placed several complaints and only got the "Ignore them" response...

This doesn't seem to correct the behavior of the violating player, given the fact that if one of us were to go off so to speak on said player in trade we would receive a ban for language.

Not to mention if it were made known in global chat that "Player X was banned for X amount of days for cheating/Harassment...whatever really" You at blizzard would be making the community a better place...

It's blizzards actions alone for not doing anything that have made the community what it is, That is the reason why people feel they have the right to be [Removed], See that word right there would get someone banned for language but calling a player and their guild Racist and the [Removed]isn't bad???

The logical thing to do is to ban this player after several complaints..Given that Blizzard can go into the chat logs and verify our statements...Yet they won't do it..

I would think given that they at the moment are the top MMO, That they would hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct and enforcement than any other game...

Yet they don't seem to fully grasp the concept of proper Customer Service...
I understand that $$ talks but your customers well being should also matter.

If a blue reads this, This type of thing will be the downfall of you all, I just don't understand why you are so cocky to think you are top dog...I find it interesting that none of you at blizz have grasped the proper concept of the words "Customer Service", it's no wonder people left your company to make better things.

You may be oversimplifying the response, Grimle. To be clear, our In-Game support staff has said that if the person was using inappropriate/vulgar language to report them via the right click report feature. Report for: Language. As that is the appropriate way to report such violations.

If they are simply being a jerk, ignore them.

Furthermore, they went on to let you know that if the person is circumventing the ignore option to report it (by submitting a ticket, using the ongoing harassment category) each and every time they do. It is essential to establish a history in these cases.

This doesn't seem to correct the behavior of the violating player, given the fact that if one of us were to go off so to speak on said player in trade we would receive a ban for language.

If your violation was reported in the appropriate manner and the other parties was not? Yes, that is entirely possible.

The important thing to remember is to not engage, if you are mutually combative then it limits our options. Report inappropriate language/subject matter when you witness it and do so every time.

We believe in giving a person the opportunity to change but there is a limit. Our Penalty Volcano outlines how that works.

Doubtful, such information tends only to encourage additional harassment, usually of the person being called out. We don't provide information about another player's account. An action taken on an account is between us and the registered user on the account.

It's blizzards actions alone for not doing anything that have made the community what it is

That isn't really true. We, Blizzard Entertainment, take the integrity of our game and the policies that we have established very seriously. We are primarily reactive in our practices though as we are not able to actively monitor all chat channels across 220+ realms. We ask that players like yourself report those violations that they witness, which we will then investigate and take the actions appropriate based on any violations found.

Unfortunately, there has been a lot of misinformation over the years which has helped to create a perfect storm of apathy and frustration, which does factor into the in-game environment.

For instance, years ago, you see someone use a profane word. You report them. A Game Master let's you know that the matter will be looked into and appropriate action taken. The next day or within the next few days you see the same character spouting the same language.

You talk to the person and they claim that nothing happened to them and that reporting is useless. So, with that in mind, you don't report their language this time around because why would you bother?

The fact of the matter is they were actioned, for a few hours or a day or more, depending on the offense and the history on the account. They have no reason to tell you what happened though and odds are want to troll you and dissuade you from reporting again.

You also have others who simply don't believe the such language is a big deal, there is a filter, use that, right?

This has been going on for years. Those that would normally report feel there is nothing done because they do not see the results of their actions and mistake the players continued behavior as acknowledgement of that "fact" . In addition, those that would normally think twice about the language they use see that it seems to be permitted so they will use it as well. Exacerbating the situation.

We originally implemented the right click report option to help address the advertisement spam that would impact players, to quickly ignore and address those accounts (usually compromised) that were doing it. That system, after a lot of feedback from the playerbase, was expanded to include many of the more common offenses found in game. Language, Naming and Cheating (i.e. exploitation). This gave a quick easy way to report possible violations.

We have continued to monitor it's use and made changes based on the results. Can it be improved? Absolutely, but it is only truly useful when it is used.

I had a guild master that was being harassed in game and IRL.

Without clear details of the events it is difficult at best to say why a particular issue did not get resolved the way it seems it should. There are a lot of factors involved and not always as clear cut as they are made out to be or how they may appear based on in-game chat alone.

IRL harassment should be reported to the proper authorities, as does the possible violation of court mandated directives.
