What is a species?

I'm pretty sure that the creature id is the "npc" that's summoned when we cast a spell.

Is the species id directly tied to this for pets? Maybe it's a 1 to 1 relation, and the species info is where the creature's battle-pet stats are? The npc/creature api isn't out yet, so I can't tell for sure.

The species ID is the main ID for battle pets. The species contains data about what type of pet it is (mechanical, humanoid, etc), as well as what creature Id it uses and what abilities it has available at what level.

Like in the example:

To get the stats of a battle pet you need to know it's species Id, it's breed Id, it's quality Id and it's level as show in the battle pet stats api:
http://us.battle.net/api/wow/battlePet/stats/258?level=25&breedId=5&qualityId=4

Thanks for that.

Is there only ever one Species with a certain Creature ID?

Right now these are both true.
