A little snippet of information for you: your farm will be visible only to yourself. So nobody's going to come by and poach your crops... or, I guess, water your plants while you're away! :)

As with anything in the game, the idea is if it's not for you, you can leave it and concentrate on other things. One of the themes you might have noticed in Mists of Pandaria is that we're trying to ensure a range of fun options. Hopefully you can pick and choose which ones interest you and focus on them. :)
