Sometimes in life bad things happen to good people, and the same is true in World of Warcraft. Even the most prepared can fall victim to account theft—but have you truly done all you can to make sure it doesn’t happen to you? Do you know what to do should someone else actually gain access to your account?

Occasionally someone may ask you to visit a website, luring you there with promises of exclusive loot, free gold, or threats of account suspension. However you are asked—be it on the forums, via whisper, or in the chat channels—beware! Such websites are dedicated to one thing, and one thing only: stealing your account information. Not only should you never visit these suspicious websites, but we also encourage you to immediately report this person to our Game Master team. To do this, simply right click on the player’s name in the chat log and select the “Report Spam” option, and our Game Master team will deal with him appropriately. With two simple clicks you can help make the world (of Warcraft) a safer place.

If in spite of all your caution, someone else has gained access to your account, don’t panic! Our customer service representatives will help you safely recover your account and all associated data. All you need to do is fill in a special Account Recovery web form and send it to us. After that we’ll reset your password and restore your access to your Battle.net account, including your WoW characters and items. However, we strongly recommend you perform a security check on your computer to make sure that your account remains safe.

If you want to learn more about how to protect your account then be sure to read our account security page. Remember—keeping your account out of harm’s way is easy when you know what to do!
