This changes the spell in some ways, so if you don't like it, I'm sorry! Just trying to come up with ideas to improve the spell.
First of all, the reasons for this... For a dot it's too short and costs waaaay too much mana. For an aoe spell, the mana cost is "understandable" but the damage is underwhelming by far and the fact that you have to wait 12 seconds for any aoe damage to even happen is ridiculous (also, 1 living bomb per mage at a time feels a little odd right now).
I still think that living bomb should be turned into a damaging version of lifebloom. Make the mana cost much less, decrease the DoT damage of the first application, make the second stack do a little less than what its current DoT damage is, and have the third stack do...well, more.
This allows pve fire mages to keep refreshing a stacking DoT up on a target for a nice dps increase (the mana cost would be much lower than its current form because the initial application is weaker, remember?). Also this could be accompanied by a glyph that increases the duration of the DoT to make life a little easier.
For a pvp mage, the boom would kind of need the knockback stuck back onto it...or at least something to make it so just a 1 stack is in some way worthwhile.
For someone aoe grinding, this wouldn't change the spell much unless they made it capable of being put on more than 1 target at a time (or if they gave mages a way to detonate it early).
In my opinion this would give the spell a little more flavor and flexibility to be used differently in different situations. However I doubt blizzard would ever consider this because they want 51 pointers to just be "situational". =(
