Players below level 10 may not join raids
I posted this on an obscure thread out on general, but it's bound to get buried under the typical slush of General QQ, so I figured I'd come here instead.

What was the problem with a level one raid?

I don't see a reason what a level one raid is going to cause. Are the gold farmers / spammers forming raiding parties and conducting business in that manner? Is it somehow easier for a funds transfer to occur of ninja'd account loot in a raid rather than a party? I don't get it.

Look at the links below to see the levels of insanity we've produced over the last four years. Level one toons are a staple for the events we've done both for our server parties or even for our own uses. Level one races enabled players who weren't even from our server to join in on the fun immediately without even having to have spent a minute there previously. Forcing people to spend an hour or two prior to any of our parties will very quickly cause them to not want to come.

I'm sure other guilds do things like this as well. Hogger raids to say the least are still fun to do as a goofy guild gathering event. Don't kill the fun for all of us unless there is a REALLY valid reason.

Low level is for some value under 60. High level is for some value over 40. Use your own judgment on deciding an appropriate value for each.

Category 0) As is, but less.

1) Disable raid invites for level 5 and under instead of 10.

Category 1) Selectively enable Level 10 raid invites

1) Settings checkbox "Allow Raid invites below level 10?"
2) Allow raid invites below level 10, if player has a high level character on their account or account is 30 days old.

Category 2) Disable Quest/XP restrictions.

1) Flag all low level quests as raid quests.
2) Remove quest/xp restrictions for low level characters.
3) Remove quest/xp restrictions, if 5 or less raid members are within xp/loot reach.
4) Remove quest restrictions, depend on quest design and xp penalty to balance difficulty.
5) Remove quest restriction, but only allow party members to help complete these quests.

Category 3) Warn new players of raid penalties.

1) Create a warning if a low level character is invited to a raid.
2) Create a tooltip for the tutorial messages upon raid invite.
3) Give a intro video or in game cutscene explaining raid mechanics.
4) Require a special slash command or a text box to be filled in in order to join a raid on a low level character.

Category 4) Make using/leaving a raid easier for new players.

1) Create a starting quest where players must join/leave a raid (potentially using NPCs as raid members).
2) List the slash command for leaving a raid in all quest penalty warnings.
3) Have a player automatically leave a raid after an extended logout.
4) Give new players a big red flashing "Leave Raid" button beside the minimap when in a raid.

Re: Players below level 10 may not join raids
One of the worst experiences a new player to WoW can have is to get invited to a raid. It immediately shuts off their ability to complete quests. Yes there are ways around that, but when you're talking about a legitimately new player who may not even have the support of friends teaching them how to play, it can just kill any progress flat. Without the starting quests, the player has no direction, no sense of their role in the game and no reasonable way to gain XP. It's even worse when done maliciously, by inviting a bunch of noobs to a raid and then dropping out. :(

I am assuming many of you are like me and played games for years before trying WoW. But WoW has been around a long time now and some of the players picking up the game now don't necessarily have that experience to draw from. Beginning players these days might have come from consoles or handheld games or maybe WoW is even the first real game they've tried. These type of players need a little more direction. You'll see a lot of changes in 3.3 to support this, and then even more in Cataclysm.

We realize it affects the legitimate (if niche) lowbie raid case so we hope this is only a temporary solution until we implement something a little more bullet proof.

If we removed the quest penalty from raids, I am fairly confident that your experience upon competing say Howling Fjord and moving into Grizzly Hills would be to spam general with "Hey, invite me to the raid!" And there would be one. Even if you didn't technically cooperate with the folks in the zone, why not splash the XP all around a bit?

Like I said, there are solutions but none of them are of the "Just flip this bit and everything will be fine" variety. They take a little thought and work.
