10gb to install PTR client?
I've been dying to hop on the PTR, especially since I'm a software engineer and would love to help test new features. However, whenever I try to install the client, it wants to download and install a full 10gb (give or take). Is this right? Is there a way to use my existing WoW install to not have to download and install a separate 10gb folder?

There is no other option available for accessing the PTR.

I assume you either haven't played a PTR in a long time, or, you're misreading the exact amount or data. When I downloaded the new PTR I only had about a 1.25 gig download.

It creates an additional installation of the WoW client, and requires 10-15gb of free space for this. It doesn't download that much information, it downloads an installer and then copies the data from your current wow install to the PTR install. After that is complete, you'll download the 1.25gb patch.
